When preparing reconstitution solutions in a laboratory setting, choosing the right water matters. Bacteriostatic water and sterile water are both used in research, but they serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.
What Is Sterile Water?
Sterile water is purified water that has been sterilized to eliminate microbial contamination. It contains no additives or preservatives. Once opened, sterile water is intended for single use only — any remaining solution should be discarded to prevent contamination.
What Is Bacteriostatic Water?
Bacteriostatic water (BAC water) is sterile water that contains 0.9% benzyl alcohol as a preservative. The benzyl alcohol inhibits the growth of bacteria, allowing the solution to remain stable for multiple uses after opening. Stability duration varies by lot — always refer to your product COA for specific storage and expiration data.
Key Differences at a Glance
| Bacteriostatic Water | Sterile Water | |
|---|---|---|
| Preservative | 0.9% Benzyl Alcohol | None |
| Multi-use after opening | Yes | No (single use) |
| Shelf life (opened) | See product COA | Discard after use |
| Typical research use | Peptide reconstitution | Single-dose applications |
Which Should You Use for Peptide Reconstitution?
For most peptide reconstitution protocols in research settings, bacteriostatic water is the preferred choice. The benzyl alcohol preservative helps maintain solution integrity across multiple withdrawals, making it more practical for ongoing laboratory work.
Sterile water may be appropriate when the research protocol specifically requires a preservative-free solution, or when the reconstituted compound is sensitive to benzyl alcohol. Always follow your institution's standard operating procedures (SOPs).
Storage and Handling
Both solutions should be stored at room temperature (15–30°C) away from direct light. Always inspect the solution for particulates or discoloration before use. Do not use beyond the expiration date indicated on the label or COA.
